A tree with a minimum circumference of 44 inches is considered a special tree. Trees under 44 inches of circumference do not require a permit for removal.
You may apply for multiple tree removals in the same permit application if they all belong to the same address.
This permit grants permission to special/Heritage tree Removal or Preserve or Relocate from private property and the public parking dimension. Use construction permit landscaping option to remove trees located at the curb or adjacent to the roadway (otherwise known as street trees).
If the tree is non-hazardous, you must pay the appropriate amount to the Tree Fund. Planting is not an option.
If you hire an ISA certified arborist, you need to enter detailed information about special tree including species, DBH etc.
(Failure to obtain a permit shall result in a minimum fine of $300 per inch of circumference) Permits are issued under at least one of the following conditions:
Provide a site plan (e.g. existing conditions, demolition or erosion & sediment control) showing special trees to be removed. Plan should include the locations, species, and size of each Special Tree to be removed. You may upload this document during your online application or choose to submit it at the office in person.
The Tree Bill requires a fee if the special tree is deemed healthy (non-hazardous). IF THE TREE IS REMOVED WITHOUT A PERMIT UFA SHALL ISSUE A FINE OF $300 PER INCH. Applicant must pay the appropriate fee to the Tree Fund to compensate non-hazardous tree removal. Tree fund amount is calculated as follows: Tree Fund Amount = non-hazardous tree circumference total inches * $55 per inch circumference There is no fee for the actual Special/Heritage Tree Permit just for the tree itself. The fee must be paid to the cashier’s office at 1100 4th St. SW, Washington, DC 20024.
The processing begins the same day of application submission. Processing time varies by complexity. UFA has forty business days to issue the permit.
